Education for Sustainable Development

As part of our Education for Sustainable Development programme, History at the Higher Education Academy, in association with the English Subject Centre and PALATINE, is launching two initiatives to encourage students and lecturers to engage with the environment beyond the classroom. We want to motivate those in classroom-based disciplines to go out and experience the places that form the context for the subject of study, in order to enrich both academic learning and environmental awareness.

Has a visit to a particular place or landscape shed new light on a subject you are studying? Has something you are studying led you to look at a place or landscape in a new way? Have you been inspired or encouraged in your studies by a visit organised by a lecturer, or somewhere you have been on holiday or on a weekend outing?

We invited students in UK higher education to write case studies of 500 - 1000 words describing how engagement with outdoor environments has enhanced their learning, and how their learning has affected their attitudes towards the environment. All case studies meeting minimum requirements will be published on the History Subject Centre website and may also be published on the website of collaborating Subject Centres. We welcomed photographs to accompany the case study.

Prizes of £300 and £200 in iTunes/Amazon vouchers were awarded for the two best case-studies from History that meet the minimum standard. Case studies were judged by a panel of Subject Centre staff and their advisors.
